Happy New year! It's now 2012, and we wanted to start the New Year with some thoughts and techniques on how to enjoy your home without unnecessarily using chemicals that are unhealthy for you and potentially harmful to the environment. There are many additional ideas and products out there, so please take this as a starting point and go from there...

Baking Soda - this is non-toxic, non-abrasive, and great for cleaning virtually everything, including laundry, teeth, kitchen countertops, bathrooms, etc.

Vinegar and lemon juice - these make fabulous cleaners, and will cut through varnish, grease and more. They're also great in the clothes washer for bright colors. Avoid using bleach whenever possible.

Hydrogen Peroxide - A disinfectant that has no odor and leaves nothing alive on the counters. It's also great to give to a dog (in a small quantity - always first check with your veterinarian) that has eaten a "non-food" item, and you want it back.

Detergents - use dye- and perfume-free detergents, and read the labels... try to use products labeled as "eco-friendly", or "environmentally-friendly". Here's a personal favorite: http://www.seventhgeneration.com/

Try to avoid keeping pesticides or anything toxic AT ALL EVER under your kitchen sink or bathroom sink, in your pantry, your closet, and preferably never in your home anywhere. These things can leak into the air and slowly poison your environment.

If possible, try to spray for bugs OUTSIDE your home ONLY. If you can, avoid using any pesticides inside your home. The very best way to keep bugs out is to seal the areas where they can enter, and make certain they cannot find anything to eat. If you drop a food crumb on the floor, and ONE ANT finds it, others will follow. Cleaning the ant trail with a generous amount of vinegar will help resolve this. If any other bugs get into the home, for instance, under the sink, borax sprinkled on the area may take care of the problem, and then have the exterminator spray outside.

Leave your shoes at the front door. Your shoes pick up all kinds of things you wouldn't want to end up in your air or your food. If you have the option, leave them in the garage. Same with visitors.

Please, avoid using any chemicals in your toilet bowls or tanks. They're almost always poisonous, corrosive, and very bad for the components in the toilet. Additionally, toilets create a "plume of mist" when they are flushed. You do not want to be breathing the vaporized chemicals. Use about a half bottle of white vinegar in the TANK, let it sit all day, or overnight, then flush a couple times. You can also use it to scrub the toilet bowl.

We have had the privilege of testing out the new Lehr Eco Trimmer, which is essentially a propane-powered weed whacker. WOW! What a fabulous product! The Lehr Eco Trimmer is powered by a propane-fueled, 4-stroke engine, which produces plenty of power to cut through even the tallest weeds, grass, and more, without the gasoline fumes and it produces only a small fraction of the pollution of a comparable gasoline-fueled machine.
The machine arrived by UPS, and within 30 minutes of having it open and out of the box, I was ready to go, all except for a standard camping propane cylinder, which I purchased at a local gas station, but Walmart or any outdoor camping supply store should have them in stock.
It took about 15 pulls to start it initially, so that the fuel could reach the engine, but once it started, was remarkably quiet (much quieter than my old 2-stroke version). It idled smoothly and was ready to cut within seconds. It started effortlessly on the first pull each subsequent time, and did a magnificent job throughout the test. I am very excited to have this new piece of lawn equipment in my arsenal!
The propane canisters can be a bit expensive, but they can be easily refilled at home with a simple coupler you can attach to your barbecue grill tank, which will bring the cost to about what you would be paying for gasoline.
Regarding emissions, which is the real reason I purchased the unit, the Lehr Eco Trimmer produces almost none. See the following features:

With the news filled with foreclosures, short sales, and falling home prices, it might seem a little far-fetched to imagine a housing shortage in the near future. However,consider this... home values in most markets have fallen well below what it would cost to build an equivalent home new, according to CNN, builders are finding it difficult, if not impossible, to secure financing for new home starts, and there is a growing trend of buyers who are in the market for affordable homes. Additionally, as the job market improves and unemployment numbers start going down, there will be a considerable pent-up demand for housing, and we could see inventories drop and prices start to rise.

It appears by all measures that home prices have bottomed-out, fears of a double-dip recession are fading, and that house and condominium inventories are starting to drop off. The sun is setting on the Homebuyer tax credit, and there are no plans to bring it back. Homes have to be under contract no later than April 30, 2010, and must close no later than June 30, 2010. Arguments can be made that paying off your credit cards will affect your credit rating, and affect your ability to purchase a home. Please remember that there are alternatives to credit cards to build your credit. Your car payment is a great one (but we have also previously advocated paying your car off and keeping it as long as possible). Alternative trade lines, such as rent payments, utility payments, cell phone bills, etc. are also good possibilities. The most important thing is to avoid spending more than you make, ever. FHA currently has very good financing programs that do not require as high of a credit score as conventional financing, and also has lower down payment programs.
We also have a list of FHA Approved Lenders to help you with any questions and get you started on your home purchase.
Credit Card Company Abuse has taken a new twist... the credit card companies are closing customer accounts without notice because they are not carrying a high enough balance, and therefore are not making enough interest on balances. Citibank, J.P. Morgan Chase, and Bank of America have all done this. Read this article for more information.
The bottom line is this: Do not finance your purchases, with the exception of your home. In troubled economic times, watching every dollar is critical. Save your money, keep your paid-off automobile, and work with cash whenever possible. Times will improve, and hopefully soon. In the meantime, it is time for a paradigm shift in the way we look at money and our finances.

Look at your expenses on a YEARLY basis...

It seems that many of us operate our budgets based upon what our payments cost us every month... that car payment is only $400 per month, and that credit card is only $228 per month, and, let's see, cable TV is only $70 per month. We do this instead of recognizing the yearly cost. That car is $4,800 per year, and that credit card payment, which is, BTW, mostly interest, totals $2,736 per year, and, yep, we spend $840 per year to watch TV. Looks like we spend $8,376 every year just on these things... that's a lot of money! Don't know about you, but I could do a lot with $8,376. That would be a very nice vacation, or a terrific addition to retirement income. This is, of course, after tax money, so we really have to earn close to $12,000 just for these three bills. Or, in even better terms, $60,000 after 5 years. Whew!
Think you might get a couple more years out of that car? If you take proper care of it, and don't absolutely have to be seen driving a vehicle that is less than 3 years old, you could save a small fortune right there. How about that credit card payment? PAY IT OFF! More than one? PAY THEM ALL OFF! And never, ever spend money again that you haven't already earned. Oh, and how about TV? Think you can't live without cable? Digital TV is over the air and free! Want to see movies? Try Netflix... it's $107.88 per year.
One more thought... eat at home. The meals that you can make at home will be healthier, less fattening, and a LOT less money. Eat out 4 times a month? Assuming a decent restaurant and tips, this could cost you $200 per month. That's $2,400 per year of after-tax money, and that's if you only eat out 4 times per month.
Do some math, and discover your own plan to save $10,000 or more every year. It doesn't seem that hard, all of a sudden, does it?

Credit card companies are in the news with reports of substantial changes to the terms that govern customer accounts -- including changes to minimum payments due and/or interest rates charged against outstanding balances. Check your statements online and in print. Monitor these closely, and contact the account holder directly with any questions or concerns. Given these changes, it's now more important than ever to pay down these outstanding balances, and to pay them off as quickly as possible, and eliminate your Credit Card Debt.
